The Cavalcade crop over events is one of the warm-up events for the 2011 Crop Over festival. Cavalcade is held at Emerald City Car Park at Six Roads in St Phillip.

The Cavalcades at crop over are a series of outdoor concerts which are held across the island, where thousands of party goers attend. Cavalcade makes a great time for Barbados holidays as it’s so much fun!

For most people who have experienced Crop over, the first thing that comes to mind is thousands of people dancing and enjoying themselves at Party Monarch and the Cavalcades or dancing along the Spring Garden Highway on Grand Kadooment Day at the end of the celebrations.

Although some events are already happening, such as the greatly successful Youth Rally and Cavalcade this past weekend, the Crop Over festival 2011 is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 2nd July with the traditional BNB (Barbados National Bank) Opening Gala which features the Ceremonial Delivery of Last Canes, with events continuing through to Grand Kadooment and Emancipation Day at the beginning of August.

The proposed slogan for Barbados’ premier festival in 2011 is ‘Crop Over – The Sweetest Summer Festival’ and there are aims to see the return of some of the traditional aspects once prominent in the festival such as community based events and folk music. If you are planning your Barbados holidays, you can see a calendar of events at Crop Over 2011 at;

The Pelican Village Craft Centre Barbados is hailed as the ‘largest Arts and Crafts centre in the Caribbean’, not just in Barbados.

I usually go on each visit as I do like the place and I have bought locally crafted jewellery and some beautiful original paintings.

However on the down side, if this is the ‘largest centre’, then the others must be pretty tiddling. Depends of course, what their yardstick was as there are many small working studios around the complex.

You can wander into them although they don’t really feel very welcoming - maybe I should try harder…I did buy an all-in-one kaftan style dress once – really unusual and original – and for a great price.

On the upside, there are the handful of stylish gift shops which are very pleasant and do have different pieces from those in the standard gift shops around Barbados. These are always worth a visit on the hunt for gifts or for a keepsake from your Barbados holidays.

As said, I do love this place but want to set expectations correctly. It’s mainly there for the Barbados Cruise hordes. They can easily walk from the ships to the Pelican Village Craft Centre.

On more than one occasion, I have been asked if this is all the shopping in Barbados.

I have pointed these people in the direction of Bridgetown, about a mile up the road for the best shopping in Barbados.

It’s always easy to park, so this is another place to ‘dip into’ when you’re on the road. It’s usually very hard to park in Bridgetown, but there is always space at the Pelican Village. I’ve never been there when it’s been busy but it’s not massively promoted – other than to the Cruisers – and it thus has a lovely peaceful vibe and making a pleasant day out or at least a few hours break from the beach.

Barbados Travel Deals can arrange your trip to the Pelican Village Craft Centre at the same time as making your travel arrangements for your Barbados holidays. Contact us now or view our luxury Barbados hotels to see what best suits your needs for your Barbados holidays.

I really like this place. Earthworks Pottery is not a day out sort of place but if you have a hire car and are passing through St Thomas and would like a glimpse at some Barbados pottery or specifically earthworks Barbados pottery, it’s definitely worth a stop.

Just include Earthworks Pottery in your drive around the island when on your Barbados holidays.

It’s worth asking for a tour when you’re there for the first time as this lovely handcrafted art is made in front of you. Earthworks Barbados is an element of Barbados arts.

There are unusual pieces, colourful – Caribbean colours – and sturdy stuff which will last.

It is quite expensive but the same pottery will be sold in the gift shops around Barbados at a higher price. They will also wrap it well for you for flying back home after your Barbados holidays have sadly come to an end.

With a gift shop and a rustic cafe attached, it’s a lovely way to spend an hour or two and maybe buy a Barbados pottery gift or personal reminder of the island.
