Former stars of the English Premier League football game are preparing for an exciting six-a-side football tournament at the world renowned Kensington Oval Barbados, usually the home of cricket, in Bridgetown Barbados on June 10th and 11th.

Working alongside the Barbados Tourism Authority and British Airways, teams representing England’s top football clubs will battle for top honours in the inaugural British Airways Football Legends Invitational tournament, raising money for local charities involved in the development of football in the Caribbean.

It involves eight teams, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United and the legends include Alan Shearer, Roberto Di Matteo, Gianfranco Zola, Steve McManaman and Paul Merson.

The two-day football extravaganza was the brainchild of the Barbados Tourism Authorities Vice President Petra Roach who said: “Attracting some of the greatest football players ever to have graced the English stage to our beautiful island is testimony to the warm reception and wonderful hospitality afforded by the people of Barbados.

“Football is huge in Barbados and the buzz of excitement about this event has already begun and we are thrilled to be working with the PFA on delivering this little slice of history to our great country.”

Christian Smith, Commercial Director of the PFA explained the long term aims of the project:

“Our aim is to establish an annual series of events featuring some of the great players of the last decade but this is only possible with the help and support of our members and the invaluable contribution of partners like the Barbados Tourism Authority and British Airways.”

Entrance will be approx. £5 for each 20 minute game.

A client who has recently been on holiday to Barbados phoned Barbados Travel Deals to thank us for suggesting the Tamarind Barbados for her and her family.

Tamarind, formerly known as Tamarind Cove, was re-opened in November 2010 to great reviews.

Location, location, location.  That’s what Tamarind Barbados is about and since it’s re-opening, it is fervent about its facilities and service.  If you are planning your Barbados holidays, Tamarind Barbados (previously called Tamarind Cove) would make an excellent choice.

Tamarind Barbados is on the Platinum Coast of Barbados and is, in our opinion, on one of the best stretches of beach in Barbados. The new Aqua School offers complimentary water sports and instruction from paddle boarding to snorkeling and water-skiing on the wonderful tranquil waters of the west coast and is very close to one of the local sea-turtle hotspots. The west coast of Barbados can make a wonderful base for Barbados holidays.

The Tamarind is great for couples and families alike. For the latter, there is ‘The Flying Fish Kids club at the Tamarind’ and ‘Club Tamarind’ for the teenagers.

You can take a complimentary water taxi to the sister ‘Elegant’ hotels of Colony Club Barbados  and Crystal Cove Barbados any day – just  a short trip along the beautiful west coast, or walk to another sister hotel, the stylish boutique hotel ‘The House Barbados’ almost next door.  The lovely Daphne’s restaurant Barbados, Zagat rated, sits in between these two delightful Barbados hotels.

Our Client and family ate well at Daphne’s restaurant Barbados. Fresh fruit in abundance and recommending the stir-frys in the evening.

You are five minutes in a taxi from Holetown Barbados where there are fine dining restaurants and shopping, so room and breakfast is a good option if you are keen on outstanding cuisine.

Brian, the Deputy Manager is usually about and happy to hear from you.

Call Barbados Travel Deals on 0845 6434 606 to enquire about availability on the Tamarind or any other luxury hotel in Barbados.

When planning your Barbados holidays, particularly if you have never travelled to Barbados before, it will be important to you to know what Barbados weather can be like.  And of course, you should be fully aware as the last thing you want is to be sat in teeming rain 24/7 when on when you thought you would be enjoying luxury Barbados holidays.

We are very regularly asked about Barbados weather and we generally have the following to say regarding the Barbados climate / Barbados climate;

The official line is that the Barbados hurricane season is from June until November and December to May is considered to be the Dry season in Barbados.   Although this is a rule of thumb to follow, I have been to Barbados in July and had a few ‘zippy’ showers – the ones where you just stay where you are, cover your book, and wait a minute or two for it to pass.  I have also been in to Barbados in November and had a few days of rain and so I would certainly take a chance on any time of the year.

Barbados avoids the worst of the storms as it is the most eastward of the Caribbean islands. It’s very humid in the summer months but the cooling trade winds blow with high consistency over the island from mid November until the end of June, and generally keep the island cooler all year round.

The South coast, (Bougainvillea, The Crane) where the Caribbean and the Atlantic merge, is cooler due to the winds but with an average temperature of 26’ C, (79’F) the climate is tolerable to wonderful for most of us warm-blooded creatures.  So the more affluent West Coast resorts (Sandy Lane, Colony Club, Sandpiper, The House etc) have less cooling winds but have the magical tranquil still waters as a result.

Talk to us at Barbados Travel Deals for our personal tips and advice, together with our clients’ experiences of Barbados weather and be sure you know when the Barbados hurricane season is!  We have a good range of luxury Barbados hotels and Barbados villas, so browse our Barbados holidays portfolio and call us for more information.

When travelling to Barbados or going on your Barbados holidays you may wish to consider hiring a car in Barbados.  There are plenty of Barbados car hire companies and you can get anything from an economy car to a luxury car. You can arrange ahead of time and have a hire car waiting for you at Barbados airport if you wish which is especially useful when on staying in Barbados villas.  Barbados roads are easy for the UK driver as they drive on the right-hand side in Barbados. Some great roads in Barbados but many need improvement so watch out for those potholes!

Driving around Barbados during the day, keep an eye out on the time as it’s very similar to the UK, the main roads will get very very busy before 9am and at 5pm. Total gridlock, man!

If you don’t want to drive when on your Barbados holidays, there are plenty of ways to get around Barbados.  With three types of buses; the Government big blue buses and the Private big yellow buses,  both of which pick you up from the bus stops, or the smaller white ZR private mini-vans, who you can hear coming from a mile away as they honk their horns continually.  The latter is the fun way to travel, usually with reggae music blasting.  These guys pick you up if you just flag them down and drop you wherever you like. They run more regularly than the buses and late into the night so are very very convenient. The fare is $1.50 Barbados regardless of the length of your ride.

On my very first journey in a ZR mini-van many many years ago, I remember wondering why they were stopping when there was absolutely no more room in the van, but the guy who fits everyone in, simply shoved a little old lady up a bit, sat a not-so-young kid on someone’s knee and I seriously thought he may lie the next person horizontally on the heads of everyone.  Everyone was very nonchalant about it all, so you just go along with it and try not to look like a tourist.  Not exactly Barbados luxury travel but fun none the less!

And finally, there are plenty of taxis in Barbados and they are government controlled. Still probably best to have an idea of how much your journey should cost and agree it up front.

Talk to us at Barbados Travel Deals for not only the best Barbados car hire prices or advice about getting around Barbados, but also for luxury Barbados holidays, Barbados villas or Barbados holidays generally.  We have a superb selection of Barbados holidays, Barbados luxury holidays and Grenadines holidays so take a look…
